As of July 1st 2017, the Riksdag (Swedish Parliament) voted in amendments to the parental benefits for immigrants with children over the age of 1.

The amendment means that parents will be entitled to 200 days if the child becomes a resident of Sweden during the second year of his or her life. If the child becomes a resident of Sweden after the second year of his or her life, the parents will be entitled to 100 days. The parental benefit will also be limited in the case of the birth of several children. Parents of children who are younger than one year have the same entitlement as before: parental benefit for 480 days. Parents who come to Sweden with older children can today have the possibility to receive as many days of parental benefit as would be the case if the children were newly born.

The purpose of the amendment is to eliminate overcompensation and to facilitate the establishment of families in society. The Riksdag has approved the Government’s proposal and the amended act will come into force on 1 July 2017.
